Colonel Mitchell Paige was born in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, August 31, 1918. He enlisted in the Marine Corps September 1, 1936 and went to recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina. He is the sole surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the ground battle for Guadalcanal, America's first ground offensive of WWII.

Purple Heart. Corporal Anthony Casamento (November 16, 1920 – July 18, 1987) was presented the Medal of Honor by President Jimmy Carter on September 12, 1980, in a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden, 38 years after Cpl Casamento's heroism on Guadalcanal in 1942. The Medal of Honor has roots in the Civil War. The Medal of Honor was established by President Abraham Lincoln in December 1861 to acknowledge extreme courage and bravery by Union sailors and Marines fighting in the Civil War. A few months later, on July 12, 1862, Congress signed a law extending eligibility for the award to soldiers in the Army.

To date, Munro is the only member of the U.S. Coast Guard to have received the Medal of Honor. Munro's remains were recovered from Guadalcanal in 1947 and were reinterred at Laurel Hill Memorial Park in Cle Elum in 1948, his family having declined a full military burial at the Arlington National Cemetery.

On Oct. 5, 1945, Boyington joined several other Marines at a ceremony at the White House to receive the Medal of Honor from President Harry S. Truman. The high honor was bestowed upon him
